I bought a store Novaform sleep innovations memory foam mattress in a Costco on. I read the reviews before and after I bought it and no one complained that the mattress is too hard. I've never felt pain in the hips and shoulders with my old mattress. Now I have to throw again and find a comfortable position and pain awareness. My husband loves the mattress, because there is more support than our innerspring mattress. I feel like the princess and the pea complain about a mattress that everyone loves.

I would check the temperature of your room. Memory foam is sensitive to temperature fluctuations, it is possible that your topper is difficult because the room is cold. Try the temperature of the room a bit and see if it helps. Test the mattress during the day is hot and see if it makes a difference.
